A Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Over the Teotihuacan Pyramids: What to Actually Expect
If you're looking this up, you've probably already seen the photos: dozens of colorful balloons lifting off at sunrise over the Teotihuacan pyramids, looking like something out of a movie. We booked a Teotihuacan hot air balloon tour ourselves, and it's every bit as good as the photos promise.
Here's what the day actually looks like, what it costs, and what nobody mentions before you book. This was one day of a longer trip, and the rest of it is in our Mexico City couples trip guide.

Booking It
We booked through Viator, with the operator Volare, the oldest continually operating hot air balloon company in the Teotihuacan valley, flying there since 2005. The listing was "Teotihuacan Hot Air Balloon Flight from Mexico City," and the package we picked included round-trip transportation from the city plus extra time afterward at the pyramid grounds. Total for the two of us: just under $400, booked well in advance.
Get the combo. At checkout, or at check-in the morning of depending on the listing, you'll choose between balloon-only and balloon plus a guided pyramid visit afterward. You're already up at 3:30am and out there for the day, so there's no real reason to skip the pyramids once you've made it that far.
The Morning Of
Pickup is at a meetup spot, not necessarily your own hotel. Ours was outside a different hotel entirely, just the group's collection point. We were the first pickup, and the van worked its way around the city gathering other couples and groups from different pickup zones on the way out. Everyone on board was in a good mood despite the hour, which helped. The drive to the launch site took about an hour.
Inflation, before the sun
You arrive in the dark and watch the crew inflate the balloons. It is a long, loud, oddly beautiful wait, and it is the coldest part of the day by a distance.
What to bring
- Layers. It is genuinely cold at 4 to 5am waiting to launch, and you will want to shed one once the sun is up.
- Closed shoes. Useful for the landing and for the pyramid grounds afterward.
- Sun protection. Not for the flight, for the three to four hours at the pyramids after it.
- Pesos in cash. For the vendors, tips, and anything you buy at the site.
The Flight
The balloon flight itself runs about 45 minutes, floating over the pyramids as the light comes up. It's hard to describe without sounding like a brochure, but it genuinely doesn't feel real while it's happening. You're looking down at thousands of years of history from a wicker basket holding eight to ten people, and looking out across the sky you'll see dozens of other balloons lifting off at the same time, all lit up by sunrise. It's one of the more striking things either of us has seen.
Airborne over the pyramids
The Pyramid of the Sun sits under you for a good stretch of the flight. Baskets are shared, so you are up there with six or eight other people, and nobody minds. Every operator launches around the same window, so the sky fills up. That is the shot everyone has seen, and it is the reason the 3:30am pickup is worth it.
Look up, not just down
Everyone points their phone at the pyramids. The envelope itself, lit from inside by the burner with a dozen other balloons drifting past it, is the shot most people forget to take.
One honest note: the area around the launch site is remote and visibly lower-income, which was a little jarring against how polished the tour operation itself felt. We're mentioning it as context rather than as a warning. The locals working the area were friendly, and it didn't change how safe or welcome we felt at any point.
What's Included, and What's an Upsell
This is the part most people don't know going in. The operator photographs you before takeoff and flies a drone alongside your balloon during the flight, and neither of those is included in the base price. After you land, they'll offer them for purchase.
Drone footage, about $100
We paid for the drone footage and do not regret it. Watching your own balloon get buzzed by a drone against a sky full of other balloons is a shot you genuinely cannot get from inside the basket, no matter how good your phone camera is.
Photos, footage, and a timelapse bundled together costs more than the footage on its own. The tiers were not itemized for us, so we are not going to quote you a number we would be guessing at. Ask Volare for current pricing when you book, or at check-in the morning of.
Actually included: after the flight there's a complimentary breakfast, then a live serenade from a Mexican band. The serenade is free, though tips are appreciated. That's standard everywhere in the city, where most street musicians play for tips rather than a fee.
The Pyramids Afterward
The van then takes you to the Teotihuacan pyramids entrance. Grounds entry runs about $15 per person and gets you onto the site itself, plus access to a small on-site museum with artifacts and a scale model of the whole complex. You'll get three to four hours to explore, which is plenty of time to actually climb around rather than rush through. A paid local guide is optional if you want the history explained in more depth, and pricing varies.
Three to four hours on foot
By the time you land and eat, you are walking the grounds mid-morning. It gets hot fast and there is very little shade, so the sun protection matters more here than it did in the basket.
The Pyramid of the Sun
Seeing it from the air first and then walking up to it is a genuinely different experience than either one on its own. That is the real argument for the combo package.
Walk the Avenue of the Dead
The Avenue of the Dead runs between the two big pyramids, so you can walk the whole complex end to end in a couple of hours. The far end is noticeably quieter than the entrance.
The site is bigger than the two pyramids
Most of the complex is low platforms and foundations spreading out either side of the avenue. Worth walking out to the edges where almost nobody goes.
You can climb most of it
Not the two main pyramids anymore, but the surrounding platforms and stairways are open. Grippy shoes help, the stone is uneven and it gets slick if the afternoon rain arrives.
The one tip we wish we'd had: dozens of vendors sell nearly identical souvenirs right at the entrance, often the exact same items as each other. Say no to the first person, keep walking, and you'll find the same thing for less a few stalls down. Ask us how we know.
Was It Worth the 3:30am Wake-Up?
Yes. The whole day, start to finish, felt smooth and professional. Our pilot was funny, clearly experienced, and the operation overall felt genuinely safe. If you're weighing whether to add this to a Mexico City trip, this is the one experience from our whole trip we'd tell you to build the schedule around, wake-up call and all.
Breakfast, then a serenade
You land, they feed you, and a band plays for the whole group. The breakfast is included in the tour price. The music is free and tips are appreciated, which is the norm across the city rather than something specific to this tour. It is the most disarming thing about the morning: you have been awake since 3am, you just floated over a two-thousand-year-old city, and now there is a live band ten feet from your eggs.
You get a certificate
Volare hands everyone a printed Certificado de Vuelo with your name and the date on it once you are back on the ground. It is a small thing and it is genuinely a nice souvenir to have.
Book it early in the trip so you have a spare morning as a weather backup, and do not schedule anything demanding for the afternoon after. You'll be back in the city by early afternoon and completely done for the day.
Whatever night you plan for the city's nightlife, make sure it isn't the night before this.

The same shared van brings everyone back afterward, dropping people near their original pickup zones rather than at their hotel doors. Budget a little extra time for an Uber at the end if your pickup zone wasn't close to where you're staying.
